Frank Lloyd Wright-designed houses are on the real estate market across the U.S.  America’s most famous architect, Wright created a uniquely American style, beginning with The Prairie Style earlier in his career.

Following a 6-year stint as chief of design at a prestigious Chicago architecture firm, Wright opened his own office in 1893. Within a decade, he had created his Prairie style, far from the Victorian homes of the day. Wright’s Prairie style reflected the flat terrain of the Midwest with lower heights, horizontal design, and free flowing space. He used “light screens” of art glass to create room divisions and used Roman bricks which were narrow compared to the standard sized bricks.

The William E. Martin House (1903) This Oak Park, Illinois residence (at top) was one of the few three-story Prairie homes Wright designed during his career. The home, listed for $1.389 M, features such Wright appointments as art glass windows, a low hipped roof, and overhanging eaves. The original oak trim and built-ins have been historically restored.

The home features 59 art glass windows.

The Avery Coonley House (1908-1912) In his 1932 autobiography,Wright described this Riverside, Illinois home as his “best house.” Initially built as a compound of several buildings, the main house was divided into two separate residences during the early 1960s. This property is the North Wing. The exterior of the home features geometric patterned ceramic tile banding, terraced gardens, and a large reflecting pool. The 6,000 square foot property is listed at $2.89 M.

The Avery Coonley House (Second Half): This Scottswood Road listing represents the second half of the main Coonley residence. The Coonley House in its entirety was considered by the architect to be the “best he could do in a house.”  Listed at $1.299 M, this one and a half story home features the Prairie style’s wide, overhanging eaves, bands of art glass, and free flowing interiors.
