Brooke Giannetti Selling Her Romantic Shingle-Style Home in California

by hookedonhouses on March 30, 2012

One of my favorite blogs is interior decorator Brooke Giannetti’s Velvet & Linen, and I’ve been in love with her beautiful house in Santa Monica for a long time (I first mentioned it on my blog back in 2009). She’s married to the talented architect Steve Giannetti, and they designed this house together.

Now they’re moving on and this charming home, which was inspired by the shingle-style California cottages of the 1930s, is on the market for $3.995 million. Take a look!

The house has 5 bedrooms, 5.5 baths, and 4,235 square feet.

I told you about the book that they wrote last year called Patina Style. I love this photo from it:

The house has been widely published in magazines like Romantic Homes, so it might look familiar to you even if you haven’t read Brooke’s popular blog.

There was a great article about the house at Old House Online that has some gorgeous photos, too, like the kitchen pic I included above, taken by Eric Roth. I love this shot he got of the house framed between two tall trees:

Isn’t it lovely? For more photos and information about the house, visit Velvet & Linen and check the listing. (The status on the listing just changed to “pending.” I knew it wouldn’t take long for someone to snap it up!)

Scenic Rural Home in Montana: Stock Farm Residence

Stock Farm 00 800x720 Scenic Rural Home in Montana: Stock Farm Residence

Stock Farm Residence was designed by studio Locati Architects and is located in the small town of Hamilton, Montana, USA. The rustic appearance and the scenic environments make this single story home give away a peaceful feel.  According to the architects, the project “is designed in three parts in order to separate the more public from the private spaces. The main living spaces are centrally located, with the outer branches of the house accommodating the more private areas such as the bedrooms and owner’s art studio. Each section of the home is linked by hallways of abundant glass to once again maximize the amazing views. A key element of the Stock Farm Residence is the centrally located covered patio. This patio is the ultimate gathering place including a built-in barbecue, dining area, and nearby fire pit”. Another important part of the project is an art studio, which can be entirely opened towards the surrounding landscape for inspiration.

Yet Another Glamourous Architecture Display in South Africa: Glass House

Glass House 1 Yet Another Glamourous Architecture Display in South Africa: Glass House

Glass House is an imposing residence designed by studio Nico Van Der Meulen Architects and located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The owners wanted a glamorous home, filled with light and strongly connected to its environment. With a total floor area of 2500 square meters, the residence meets its requests. According to the architects, “the shape on the south side is a half circle, forming a horseshoe on the north side. The porte cochere is a suspended glass and stainless steel structure, with view into the house and a stainless steel and glass staircase, suspended over a heated pond, (which in summer acts as a temperature stabilizer, and in winter as a giant heater) with a circular, raised glass water feature in the background, framed by a beam two storeys high”. The interiors of the Glass House are highly modern, with details that dazzle the mind. Have a look and tell us what you find most intriguing.

A New House Built to Look Like Grey Gardens

by hookedonhouses on March 19, 2012

In the early ’70s, a now-classic documentary was made about Jackie Kennedy’s aunt, Edith Bouvier Beale, and her daughter, known as “Little Edie,” who were living together in a broken-down family mansion in East Hampton. In 2009 the HBO movie Grey Gardens introduced a new generation to the story–and the beautiful old estate they lived in.

There’s a new house on the market in Massachusetts that was inspired by the HBO version of Grey Gardens in its heyday (shown above). But first, let’s take a look at how it looked in the movie:

Production designer Kalina Ivanov did an amazing job recreating the rooms and bringing them to life.

In the movie, Jessica Lange played the eccentric Big Edie, and Drew Barrymore was her daughter, Little Edie.

Sadly, by the time the documentary was filmed in 1973, the real-life Grey Gardens had deteriorated to this:

Hard to believe the women were still living there amid the filth and rotted floorboards–not to mention raccoons and other critters. Albert Maysles, one of the directors of the documentary, said the most difficult thing about filming it was the condition of the home: “The first thing you noticed was the smell from all the animals,” he said.

Here’s a screenshot of it from the original film, when it looked abandoned:

In 1984, Architectural Digest featured the iconic house, which had been bought in 1979 by Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and his wife, writer Sally Quinn. Here’s how it looked then, after its restoration:

You can see how similar the real entry hall and staircase is to the one in the movie I showed you above:

AD photos taken by Peter Vitale.

Even if I hadn’t told you these photos were taken in the ’80s, I bet you would’ve guessed, right?

Here’s how the exterior of the real house looks today:

Which brings me to the reason why I started looking at photos of Grey Gardens again in the first place–a newly built home in Falmouth, Massachusetts, which was inspired by it.

The homeowner, Michael E. Jaye, saw photos of the house from the HBO movie and told his architect, Leonard J. Baum, that he wanted the exterior to look like it (shown at the top of the post, with the shutters). Here’s the result:

It’s not as large as the original, and the interior layout isn’t the same, but the front and sides look the way the real one did at the turn of the century, shutters and all.

The interior has a lighter, less formal feel to it than the original.

The new house has 5 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, and about 4,000 square feet. It’s on the market for $2.995 million.

I really like the rugs in these rooms.

Thanks to Betty for telling me about this house. I love it!

It sits on nearly 2 acres overlooking Oyster Pond in Upper Cape Cod. The listing says:

“Enjoy swimming from your private dock, exploring the Salt Pond Bird Sanctuary Conservation area across the street, walking to the sandy beach on Vineyard Sound or biking the Shining Sea Bikeway.”

If you could build a house inspired by one you’ve seen on TV or in the movies, which one would it be? It’s hard for me to choose–I love so many!–but today I’m thinking I wouldn’t mind living in a version of Kate Winslet’s English cottage from The Holiday. I could also go for the beach house from Something’s Gotta Give. Or this one from Grey Gardens!

A New House with Turn-of-the-Century Style in Ocean City

by hookedonhouses on March 11, 2012

Whenever I see a builder incorporating old-house details into new construction, I want to cheer. This one in Ocean City, for example, was inspired by the classic turn-of-the-century vacation homes on the Jersey Shore.

It was built by Buck Custom Homes and is on the market for $2.799 million. Take a look!

The house is close to the beach, which is always a plus in my book. According to the listing: “The three story, 5000+ square foot home blends modern convenience and traditional style into the perfect beach house, truly a fine setting to create family memories.”

Looking into the dining room, which is painted black (correction: the designer tells me the color is actually a dark brown):

The woodwork is beautiful.

The glass doorknobs remind me of the ones we had in our old house when I was growing up:

There are 6 bedrooms and 6.5 baths. I love little round turret rooms like this one:

Looking into the kitchen:

Christine Droney of Show & Sell Home Staging decorated the house, and she’s the one who told me about it (thanks, Christine!).

The Spring green paint throughout much of the house is by Sherwin Williams, called “Sprout.”

The house has 4 porches in all, and 3 are on the back of the house:

The back door leads to a mudroom:

Like it? For more photos and information, check the listing and Buck Custom Homes.

P.S. Anyone else have trouble “springing ahead” this morning? I could have used that extra hour of sleep!

Scarlett Johansson & Ryan Reynolds Selling House in L.A.

by hookedonhouses on March 1, 2012

Exes Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds finalized their divorce last summer, and now they’re parting ways with their former home in L.A., too. The Buff & Hensman-designed “Wong House” was built in 1969 in the Los Feliz hills.

They paid $2.9 million, “totally restored and upgraded” the house, and are now selling it for $3.65 million. Take a look!

I thought it was kind of sad when they split. They seemed like a cute couple. She has since dated Sean Penn, of all people (didn’t see that coming) and he’s now being linked to Blake Lively of Gossip Girl.

There aren’t many photos in the listing, so some of these are from when it was on the market before. Here’s how that living room looked when they bought it (from the old MLS photos):

There are 2 bedrooms and 3 baths. Here’s a bedroom pic from the old listing, since the new one doesn’t show it:

Love all the big windows in this house.

I’ve been a fan of Ryan’s since I saw his 2005 comedy Just Friends. It’s kinda goofy, and he wears a fat suit in it, but whenever it’s on TV, I have to stop and watch. It always makes me laugh.

Like the house? More photos and information in the listing by Keller Williams.

P.S. One of my favorite movie houses is the one that Ryan Reynolds’ family owned in the Sandra Bullock romantic comedy The Proposal.

You can see my post about it and how they made a house in Massachusetts look like it was in Alaska here. His movie The Change-Up has a great traditional house in it, too!

Complex Maleny House With Interesting Mix of Windows

Maleny House by Bark Design Architects Complex Maleny House With Interesting Mix of Windows

Owners of the Maleny House (or the “Glass House Mountain House” in Maleny, Australia) challenged Australian Bark Design Architects to design a complex, landscape-interacting residential structure. According to its architects, the residential structure “has qualities of being anchored, robust and earthbound as well as being transparent, light and floating.” The modern office space overlooks the main access road and sloping landscape, while the adjacent wooden deck and terrace capture views of the extraordinary landscape.

Maleny House by Bark Design Architects 2 Complex Maleny House With Interesting Mix of Windows

“Memorable to the experience is the ‘sanctuary’ of the courtyard space, whose edges are defined by ambiguous indoor outdoor thresholds of the transparent internal spaces, sitting between the refuge of a monumental basalt ‘Garden Wall’  and the broader natural volcanic landscape.” The semi-enclosed garden is protected by a caged stone wall protecting the privacy on the front side downstairs spaces. An interesting mixture of different windows were used to flood the interior with light – corner windows at the front entrance and upstairs, vertical windows, glass walls and sliding doors throughout the house. Different naturally colored frames  – from thin to modern bay windows – adorn the intricate floor plan. You will be amazed by the different vantage points offering splendid views, just check out the video below, filmed during the construction and enjoy!

Hawkesbury Residence Capturing Views Of Wanaka Valley:

Hawkesbury Residence by Marmol Radziner Hawkesbury Residence Capturing Views Of Wanaka Valley

Capturing the rural landscape of Wanaka Valley, the Hawkesbury Residence in Mt Barker, New Zealand, uses the landscape as an artistic, ever-changing art work as part of its architecture. Standing at the foot of the hill behind the property, the elongated shape of the residence allows all spaces to be flooded with the perfect amount of natural light. Los Angeles-based Marmol Radziner studio have completed this stunning 2,150 square foot residential project in 2011 and since then, the inhabitants have been enjoying the modern interiors and landscape beyond, framed by the roof line and cedar deck.

Hawkesbury Residence by Marmol Radziner 2 Hawkesbury Residence Capturing Views Of Wanaka Valley

The interior program encompasses two volumes – social and private – connected by stairs. The volume containing the master bedroom and two additional bedrooms, the master and secondary bathrooms and two side decks sits slightly lower then the social volume. Here, a beautiful set of side-by-side fireplaces – one in the great room and the other one on the adjacent outside deck – provide relaxation and peaceful moments. All spaces are spread over one single story so that the interiors and the front side pool have unobstructed access to the landscape. Stone walls and timber details integrate the house in its surroundings, constructing the perfect home for its owners.
